Success in Early Orthodontic Treatment Quintessence Publishing |

Residents in orthodontic graduate school can recall their attempts to establish a personal orthodontic treatment philosophy. We were all exposed to the extraction vs. non-extraction philosophies as well as the early vs. late treatment philosophies. Drs. PATTI and D'ARC re-awaken those recollections and give ample and graphic reasons for early treatment in this superb textbook. The text is logically organized by presenting normal growth and the establishment of occlusion, followed by obstacles to the development of dentofacial harmony. Then, there are sections on diagnostic examination, treatment of malocclusions and orthodontic appliances. They include an "Algorithm for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures" which is a sequential and orderly flow chart from the initial clinical examination, casts, photographs, etc. This is followed by the Definition of the Problem and Treatment Planning. This is very helpful for clinicians to show their staff how all the orthodontic records fit together into our diagnosis and treatment planning. The authors are proponents of Ricketts Bioprogressive Philosophy. They show many illustrated diagnostic problems, like, e.g. a non-skeletal open-bite malocclusion with a unilateral right posterior crossbite in the mixed dentition. They discuss the pros and cons of treating with removable and fixed tongue cribs. In this example they used a quadhelix with spurs and this appliance corrected both the open-bite and the crossbite. Even though the authors are professors, they did not treat this as an academic exercise. They have created a very readable clinical textbook for orthodontists and their clinical staffs.
